How to Convert HEIC to JPG on Windows

Windows 10 and 11 do not open HEIC out of the box. You have two options: install the free Microsoft codec and use the Photos app, or skip the install and convert in your browser.

Method 1: Install the HEIF extensions and use Photos

   Install HEIF Image Extensions

   Open the Microsoft Store, search for HEIF Image Extensions, and install it (free). On older Windows 10 builds, also install HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer to decode HEVC.

   Open your HEIC file

   Double-click the .heic file. With the extension installed, it opens in the Photos app — no paid codec required.

   Save a copy as JPG

   In Photos, click the more menu (⋯) in the toolbar and choose Save as, then pick .jpg. The app writes a separate JPG copy you can open anywhere.

Method 2: Convert in your browser (no install)

Getting HEIC files onto your PC

• USB cable — connect your iPhone, tap Trust, then copy photos from the DCIM folder.
• iCloud — download your photos from iCloud.com on the PC.
• Email or AirDrop — send the files to yourself and save the attachments.

Tips for Windows users

• Convert in bulk for free by adding up to 3 files at a time, then repeat as needed.
• Keep the original HEIC as a backup — it is roughly half the size of the JPG.
• Your photos are never uploaded, which matters for sensitive or personal images.
